Obsidian is volcanic glass that forms when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that no crystal structure can grow. As early as prehistoric times, this material was used by humans to create razor-sharp tools, arrowheads, and mirrors due to its smooth, glass-like fracture surfaces.

In ancient civilisations such as those of the Mayans and Aztecs, the stone held deep ceremonial significance. They polished obsidian into mirrors used for rituals and self-reflection, believing the stone could reveal the truth behind outward appearances.

Within astrology, Black Obsidian is strongly associated with the zodiac sign Scorpio. It is considered to reflect the intense, transformative energy of this sign and symbolises the power to explore one's own shadow aspects.

• Although it is a natural product, obsidian can be fractured sharply down to a molecular level; as a result, its cutting edges are sometimes smoother and sharper than those of modern steel scalpels.
• Geologically, obsidian is not a mineral but an amorphous volcanic glass, as the lava cooled so rapidly that there was no time for the formation of an organised crystal structure.
• In the folklore of various cultures, polished obsidian mirrors were used as 'windows to the soul' to reveal hidden truths.

Care

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass and is moderately hard, rating approximately 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. As it is glass, the stone can chip or splinter if struck hard — so wear your bracelet with care and store it separately, away from hard surfaces and other jewellery.

Brief contact with water is generally fine for obsidian, but do remove your bracelet before showering, swimming, and washing up, and keep it away from perfume, soap, and lotion. This will help maintain its glass-like, deep black lustre, keeping it clear and blemish-free.

For cleaning, a soft, dry cloth is sufficient to wipe away skin oils and dust. Avoid abrasive scrubbing or hard brushes, to prevent scratching the smooth glass surface.
