History

The name hematite comes from the Greek "haima": blood. When the stone breaks or is polished, the powder turns reddish — this pigment was used for cave paintings as early as prehistoric times.

Hematite is an iron ore; in ancient Egypt, amulets and mirrors were crafted from it, and Roman soldiers associated the stone with Mars, the god of war — a symbol of steadfastness.

Because Hematite is a heavy, iron-bearing stone, it is often linked in these teachings to the concept of grounding: finding a firm foundation and remaining present in the here and now, which is essential for a balanced energetic system.

• Although Hematite appears metallic and grey on the outside, the filings and powder of the stone turn blood-red, earning it the nickname 'Bloodstone'.
• In 2004, the NASA rover Opportunity discovered large quantities of Hematite on Mars; this mineral contributes to the characteristic rust-red colour of the 'Red Planet'.
• Due to its high lustre after polishing, Hematite was used in antiquity, long before the invention of glass panes, to create the very first mirrors.
• Hematite is a remarkably heavy stone; because it consists of approximately 70% iron, a bracelet made from this material feels considerably heavier on the wrist than most other natural stones.

Care

Hematite is moderately hard, with a Mohs scale rating of approximately 5 to 6. The polished, reflective layer does not scratch easily, but a hard knock can cause a dent or a dull spot — therefore, store your bracelet separately from other jewellery.

Important for hematite: it is an iron ore and therefore sensitive to prolonged moisture. With continuous contact with water, the stone can develop rust spots or dull edges. So, remove your bracelet before showering, swimming, washing dishes, and exercising, and keep it away from perfume, soap, and lotion.

For care, dry the beads immediately after contact with moisture and wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. This way, the metallic grey mirror-like lustre will maintain its sharp reflection.
