Sodalite was first scientifically described in 1811 following its discovery in the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland. The stone's name is a direct reference to the high sodium content in the mineral, derived from the Latin word 'sodium'.

The stone gained international renown at the beginning of the 20th century as the 'Princess Blue'. This occurred after Princess Mary of Wales, during a royal visit to Ontario in Canada, became fascinated by its deep blue structure and had the stone used for the decoration of Marlborough House in London.

Care

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 5.5 to 6, Sodalite is moderately hard and therefore more susceptible to scratches than harder quartz stones. Store your bracelet separately from other jewellery and avoid hard knocks to help preserve the beauty of its deep blue beads.

Sodalite can be somewhat porous. Therefore, keep the stone away from water, perfume, soap, and lotion; prolonged moisture or chemicals may dull or absorb into its colour. Remove your bracelet before showering, swimming, and washing up.

For care, a soft, dry cloth is sufficient to remove skin oils and dust. Avoid chemical cleaners to help the blue hues with white veining retain their depth.
