History

The name amethyst comes from the Greek "amethystos": not intoxicated. In antiquity, the stone was worn as a protection against drunkenness, and drinking vessels were even crafted from it.

Throughout history, amethyst has been a stone of royalty and clergy — for centuries, it has adorned crowns, rings, and prayer beads. For a long time, amethyst was as precious as ruby and sapphire, until large deposits in South America made it accessible to everyone.

• Until the discovery of enormous deposits in Brazil in the 19th century, amethyst was so rare that its value was equal to that of diamond, ruby, and sapphire.
• In nature, amethysts often grow in geodes; these are hollow, round rocks completely covered on the inside with shimmering, hexagonal crystal points.

Care

Amethyst is a purple quartz and, with approximately 7 on the Mohs scale, a hard, reasonably scratch-resistant stone. Nevertheless, it is wise to store your bracelet separately from other jewellery, so that the beads do not rub against harder materials.

The main consideration for amethyst is sunlight: prolonged, intense exposure can cause the purple colour to fade. Therefore, do not store your bracelet on a sunny windowsill. Brief contact with water is generally fine for the stone, but do remove it when showering, swimming, or exercising, and keep it away from perfume, soap, and lotion.

For care, wipe the beads after wearing with a soft, dry cloth. This will help preserve its deep purple glow for the longest time.
