History

The name Apatite is derived from the Greek word 'apatao', meaning to deceive or mislead. The stone received this distinctive name in the 18th century because, due to its enormous variety of colours, it was often mistaken for other minerals such as beryl, peridot, or tourmaline.

Although Apatite is a common mineral in the Earth's crust, transparent gemstone-quality specimens are relatively rare. Throughout the centuries, the stone has been valued by collectors for its unique fluorescence and the recognisable 'neon' blue colours reminiscent of tropical waters.

• Due to its enormous variety of colours and lustre, the stone is often called the 'deceiver', as in its unpolished form it is almost indistinguishable from gemstones such as peridot or topaz.
• The rare 'neon' blue variety from Madagascar is highly prized by collectors for its intense colour, reminiscent of the famous Paraíba tourmaline.

Care

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 5, Apatite is a relatively soft gemstone — it is even the reference stone for that value. Consequently, Apatite is more susceptible to scratches than many other stones. Store your bracelet separately and keep it away from harder jewellery and surfaces.

Brief contact with water is generally fine for the stone, but avoid prolonged soaking. Remove your bracelet before showering, swimming, and exercising, and keep it away from perfume, soap, and lotion to prevent its intense blue-green colour from dulling.

For care, wipe the beads with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. Avoid chemical cleaners to help preserve its clear ocean colour.
