Eagle Eye is a variety of quartz closely related to the well-known Tiger Eye and Hawk's Eye. Its characteristic grey colour and 'chatoyance' (the cat's eye effect) arise from the parallel growth of amphibole fibres, which over millions of years have been replaced by quartz while retaining their structure.

Historically, stones with this specific optical effect were often worn as amulets for protection and clarity. Travellers and merchants valued the stone for its association with the keen gaze of a bird of prey, which was believed to aid in observing details that remained hidden to others.

The stone's optical effect is called chatoyance, derived from the French 'œil de chat' (cat's eye), and occurs due to the reflection of light on the microscopically small, parallel fibres within the stone.
In gemmology, Eagle Eye is considered the grey sibling of the well-known golden-brown Tiger Eye and the blue Hawk's Eye, with its colour determined by the degree of oxidation during formation.
Due to its resemblance to the iris of a bird of prey, the stone was often incorporated into amulets in antiquity, symbolising vigilance and an 'all-seeing gaze' during long journeys.

Care

Eagle Eye is a quartz variety, related to Tiger Eye, and with a hardness of approximately 7 on the Mohs scale, it is quite durable and scratch-resistant. However, hard knocks or contact with other jewellery can still cause scratches – so store your bracelet separately.

Brief contact with water is generally fine, but do not allow it to soak for extended periods. Remove your bracelet before showering, swimming, or washing up, and keep it away from perfume, soap, and lotion, as these can dull its silky lustre over time.
