The Stone

History

The history of Kambaba Jasper is the history of life itself. Geologically, the stone is not a jasper, but a stromatolite: a fossilised layer of cyanobacteria. These microorganisms are among the oldest known life forms and were responsible for producing oxygen in the atmosphere billions of years ago.

The distinctive dark 'eyes' and swirls in the stone are the fossilised remains of these ancient bacterial colonies. Each bead is thus a small fossil and a tangible connection to the deep, prehistoric history of our planet. The stone is primarily found in Madagascar and South Africa.

Astrology & Moon

Within astrology, Kambaba Jasper is often linked to the zodiac sign Scorpio. This sign, which represents depth, transformation, and mystery, finds an anchor of stability and peace in the stone's grounding symbolism.

The stone's ancient origin is seen in some traditions as a symbol of the cyclical nature of life. It represents the constant cycle of growth, decay, and rebirth, much like the seasons that shape the Earth.

Within Chakra Teachings

Within chakra teachings, green Kambaba Jasper is linked to the fourth chakra, the Anahata or heart chakra. This energy centre is a symbol in Eastern traditions for love, compassion, and emotional balance. The stone is considered a symbol for the calm and peace needed to find inner harmony.

Due to its earthy colours and grounding symbolism, the stone is also associated with the first chakra, the Muladhara or root chakra. In this teaching, this chakra represents the foundation of our existence: stability, security, and our connection to the physical world. Kambaba Jasper here symbolises a firm and reassuring foundation.

Fun Facts

  • Kambaba Jasper is not a true jasper, but a stromatolite, a fossil of billions of years old colonies of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).
  • These ancient microorganisms were crucial for the development of life on Earth by producing oxygen in the atmosphere.
  • The stone is sometimes also called 'Crocodile Jasper' due to its green-black patterns reminiscent of a crocodile's skin.
  • The name is derived from the Kambaba region in northwestern Madagascar, one of the most important localities in the world.

Care

Kambaba Jasper is a form of quartz and has a good hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. It is reasonably resistant to scratches, but it is always advisable to store your bracelet separately to prevent friction with harder materials or other jewellery.

Unlike some other stones, Kambaba Jasper can withstand sunlight well and its colour will not fade. The stone can tolerate brief contact with water, but please remove your bracelet when showering, swimming, or exercising. Also avoid direct contact with soap, perfume, and other chemicals to protect its lustre and ensure the longevity of the elastic.

For daily care, it is sufficient to wipe the beads clean with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. This will remove skin oils and preserve the stone's natural, earthy appearance.
