History

The names Sesame Jasper and Kiwi Jasper are modern and directly refer to the stone's appearance, which is reminiscent of sesame seeds or the flesh of a kiwi. As the stone has only appeared on the market relatively recently, it does not have a long, classic history like stones such as Lapis Lazuli or Turquoise.

The symbolic meaning of Sesame Jasper has therefore primarily been shaped within contemporary culture. Due to its calm, balanced appearance, the stone is often used as a symbol for inner peace and is employed in meditation and mindfulness practices to support a sense of harmony.

Astrology & Moon

Within astrology, Sesame Jasper is often linked to the zodiac sign Libra. This air sign is known for its pursuit of justice, harmony, and balance in all aspects of life. The symbolism of the stone aligns seamlessly with this.

In a broader symbolic context, the contrast between the light base and the dark speckles is sometimes seen as a reflection of the yin-yang principle. Herein, the stone is considered to represent the harmonious unity of opposites, such as light and dark, stillness and action.

Within Chakra Teachings

In chakra teachings, Sesame Jasper is often linked to the fourth chakra: Anahata, or the heart chakra. This energy centre, located at the heart, is regarded in Eastern traditions as the seat of love, compassion, and emotional balance.

As a symbol for harmony, Sesame Jasper is associated with this chakra within these teachings. The heart chakra, in that tradition, symbolises the nurturing, calm attitude needed to live life with an open and balanced heart.

Interesting Facts

  • Despite the name 'jasper', the stone is not a true jasper mineralogically. It is a type of granite or pegmatite, consisting of quartz with inclusions of black tourmaline and sometimes greenish amazonite.
  • The popular nickname 'Kiwi Jasper' comes from its resemblance to the inside of a kiwi fruit: a light base with small, dark speckles.
  • The distinctive black spots and streaks in the stone are fragments of black tourmaline, a mineral often associated with grounding and protection in crystal lore.
  • Due to the random distribution of mineral inclusions, the pattern of each Sesame Jasper bead is completely unique, comparable to a natural fingerprint.

Care

Sesame Jasper is a combination of quartz and tourmaline and has a hardness of approximately 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it a strong and durable stone suitable for daily wear. Nevertheless, it is advisable to store the bracelet separately to prevent scratches from contact with harder materials.

The stone is generally resistant to water and sunlight, but as with most natural stones, prolonged excessive exposure can affect its colour over time. Remove the bracelet when showering, swimming, or exercising, and avoid direct contact with chemicals such as perfume and lotions.

To maintain the natural appearance of the beads, you can wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. This removes skin oils and dust and keeps the stone in optimal condition.
