Raw Clear Quartz

Impression of the raw stone

“True clarity is not the absence of colour, but the presence of pure light.”

Clear Quartz is a stone for those seeking simplicity and clarity. For those who believe a pure foundation is key to focus and insight.

With its crystal-clear, colourless appearance, Clear Quartz is the embodiment of purity. This stone, essentially pure quartz, has traditionally been regarded as the 'master' among crystals and forms a foundation in countless cultural and spiritual traditions worldwide.

While perfectly transparent Clear Quartz is highly sought after, many stones contain natural inclusions, veils, or 'phantom' structures. These imperfections are not flaws, but rather testimonies to the stone's unique growth and history.

History

The name Clear Quartz originates from ancient Greece. Philosophers like Theophrastus called it 'krystallos', meaning 'clear ice'. It was believed that the stone was a form of ice, frozen so deeply and permanently by the gods that it could never melt.

Throughout history and in virtually every culture, Clear Quartz has played a symbolic role. From Roman signet rings to the crystal balls of fortune-tellers and the 'life stones' in Australian and South American shamanic traditions; the stone was always regarded as a powerful symbol of light, clairvoyance, and connection to the divine.

Astrology & Moon

In astrology, Clear Quartz is seen as a universal stone that resonates with all zodiac signs. Due to its neutral and pure nature, it is not linked to one specific sign, but is considered a symbol that can reflect the qualities of any sign without colouring them.

Symbolically, the stone is often associated with the Sun and the Moon – the two great lights in the sky. Just like these celestial bodies, which cast light into darkness, Clear Quartz in symbolism represents consciousness, insight, and the illumination of what is hidden.

Within Chakra Teachings

Within chakra teachings, Clear Quartz is unanimously linked to the seventh chakra: Sahasrara, or the Crown Chakra. This energy centre, located at the top of the head, is regarded in Eastern traditions as the gateway to higher consciousness and spiritual connection.

The clarity and purity of Clear Quartz make it a perfect symbol for this chakra. In tradition, the Crown Chakra represents a clear, unbiased mind and the transcendence of the ego. The stone is used in this context as a reminder of this state of pure consciousness.

Fun Facts

  • The English word 'crystal' is directly derived from the ancient Greek name for Clear Quartz, 'krystallos'.
  • Quartz, and therefore Clear Quartz, is piezoelectric. This means it generates an electrical voltage under mechanical pressure. Due to this property, wafer-thin quartz plates have been used for decades as precision components in watches, radios, and computers.
  • After feldspar, quartz is the most common mineral in the Earth's crust. The grains in the sand on beaches and in deserts largely consist of quartz.
  • Sometimes one crystal grows over another, with the shape of the original crystal remaining visible inside as a 'ghost' or 'phantom'. This is known as phantom quartz.

Care

Clear Quartz is a form of quartz and has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it a robust and scratch-resistant stone, ideal for jewellery worn daily. Nevertheless, it's wise to store the bracelet separately from harder gemstones like diamond or sapphire to keep its surface pristine.

The stone is excellently resistant to water and can also withstand sunlight well; its colour will not fade. However, it is advisable to remove the bracelet when showering, swimming, or exercising. This is not so much for the stone itself, but to protect the elastic and prevent soap and lotion residues from dulling its shine.

To maintain the natural lustre and clarity of the Clear Quartz, simply wipe the beads with a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing. This removes skin oils and dust, allowing the stone to retain its pure radiance.
