The name Sunstone directly refers to the most powerful celestial body. Historians suspect that the Vikings used a variant of this stone (Icelandic spar, also known as 'sólarsteinn') as a navigational instrument to determine the sun's position on cloudy days.

In ancient Greece, the stone was linked to the sun god Helios, who, according to myths, drew the sun across the sky in a golden chariot. Sunstone was regarded as a fragment of the sun itself and was worn to attract warmth and vitality.

Within astrology, Sunstone has traditionally been associated with the zodiac sign Leo. As a sign ruled by the sun, Leo symbolises vitality, leadership, and radiant, creative energy.

• The unique shimmer in Sunstone is called 'aventurescence'. This effect is caused by thousands of tiny, flat inclusions of minerals such as hematite or goethite, which reflect light like tiny mirrors.
• Sunstone belongs to the feldspar family, just like its counterpart Moonstone. Together, they symbolise the duality of sun and moon, day and night, masculine and feminine energy.
• The most valuable variant is the Oregon Sunstone from the United States. The shimmer in this stone is caused by copper inclusions, which create an exceptionally bright sparkle and a wide range of colours.
• In the nineteenth century, a large deposit of Sunstone was discovered in Canada. The stone was used there by indigenous peoples in trade and in ceremonies to invoke the spirit of the sun.

Care

Sunstone is a feldspar mineral with a hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. This makes the stone reasonably hard, but more susceptible to scratches than, for example, quartz. Store your bracelet separately to prevent abrasion against harder materials.

The stone is generally stable in sunlight, but as with most gemstones, it is advisable to avoid prolonged exposure to bright, direct sunlight. Brief contact with water is not an issue, but remove your bracelet when showering, swimming, or exercising, and avoid contact with perfume, soap, and other chemicals.

To maintain the warm lustre and internal sparkle, it is best to wipe the beads with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. This removes skin oils and keeps the stones in optimal condition.
