The Tridacna gigantea, also known as the giant clam, is the largest living bivalve mollusc in the world and can live for over a hundred years. In maritime history, these impressive shells were often used as decorative elements in churches or as valuable trade goods in coastal regions around the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Within various Eastern cultures, Tridacna has been considered one of the 'seven treasures' in Buddhist traditions for centuries. Due to its white, pure colour, the material was often incorporated into prayer beads and ornaments to symbolise clarity of mind and spiritual steadfastness.

The giant clam is the largest bivalve in the world and can reach a weight of over 200 kilograms in the wild, with the shell adding a small layer of limestone each year.
Although the shell appears pure white when polished, the living giant clam in the ocean often displays spectacular, vibrant colours due to the presence of algae in its tissue.

Care

Tridacna shell is an organic material, composed of calcium carbonate (lime), and with a Mohs hardness of approximately 3, it is soft and susceptible to scratches. Wear your bracelet gently, store it separately, and keep it away from keys and harder jewellery.

As lime is acid-sensitive, acidic liquids, perfume, soap, and lotion can affect the surface and dull its milky-white lustre. Keep your bracelet away from these, remove it before showering, swimming, and washing up, and do not leave the shell submerged in water for extended periods.

For care, wipe the beads with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical cleaners. This will help the warm, milky-white material retain its soft, natural appearance.
