History
The name pyrite originates from the Greek word 'pyros', meaning fire. This designation is no coincidence: when struck with iron, pyrite produces sparks. Consequently, the stone was already used in prehistoric times as an essential tool for making fire.
Throughout history, pyrite earned the nickname 'Fool's Gold', as prospectors often mistook its shimmering crystals for real gold. Furthermore, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the stone played a crucial role in the development of early firearms, with the spark from the pyrite igniting the gunpowder.
Astrology & Moon
In astrology, pyrite is strongly associated with the zodiac sign Leo. The stone is said to reflect the solar power and self-awareness of this sign, and symbolises the natural authority and focus needed to achieve goals.
In alignment with the lunar calendar, pyrite is often linked to the waxing moon phase. This is considered a time of building, growth, and manifesting intentions, with the stone symbolising the energy to persevere.
Within Chakra Theory
Within chakra theory, pyrite is traditionally connected with the third chakra, also known as the Manipura or solar plexus chakra. This energy centre is located in the upper abdomen and, in this tradition, symbolises personal power, self-confidence, and the inner drive to pursue ambitions.
In the context of the chakras, it is believed that the stone's golden, reflective lustre resonates with the fiery energy of this centre. Within this teaching, the solar plexus chakra is associated with the transformation of thoughts into tangible results, with pyrite serving as a visual anchor for mental focus and determination.
Fun Facts
- Pyrite is a master of geometry and often occurs in nature as nearly perfect cubes with sharp angles and lines.
- During the time of the Incas and Aztecs, large, flat pieces of polished pyrite were used as mirrors due to their strong reflective properties.
- Many antique Victorian-era jewellery pieces marked as 'marcasite' are, in reality, small, cut pieces of pyrite.
- Despite its 'Fool's Gold' nickname, pyrite is considerably harder than real gold and can even scratch glass.
Care
Pyrite is moderately hard, rating approximately 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Its metallic, golden lustre does not scratch easily, but hard knocks can cause damage — store your bracelet separately from other jewellery.
Important with pyrite: it is an iron sulphide and therefore notably sensitive to water. Prolonged contact with water or moisture can cause the stone to oxidise and become dull or rusty. Therefore, remove your bracelet before showering, swimming, and washing up, dry it immediately after contact with moisture, and keep it away from perfume, soap, and lotion.
For care, use only a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water and chemical cleaners; this will help pyrite maintain its lustre, reminiscent of raw gold.
